Description

In 1387, Arent van der Dussen, bailiff of South Holland and grandson of Albert I of Hainaut, Count of Holland, was given permission to build a castle. The fort is surrounded on all sides by a wide moat. The stone panel over the main gate bears the coats of arms of the van der Dussen, Suringar, Van Brecht, D’Ursel, Van Gendt, De Croix, Van Axele, Groesbeek and Van der Schueren families… For more information, see this Wikipedia article

He was better known by his nickname Rinaldo Boteram, and sold the finest tapestries of the period, such as the one shown here (Triumph of Death), to the great Italian families (Sforza, Gonzaga, Este, etc.). This is the family of Michiel, 1600-1683, his wife Willemine van Setten, his children Kornelis, Elisabeth, Maria, Otto and Anna.
