In 1387, Arent van der Dussen, bailiff of South Holland and grandson of Albert I of Hainaut, Count of Holland, was given permission to build a castle. The fort is surrounded on all sides by a wide moat. The stone panel over the main gate bears the coats of arms of the van der Dussen, Suringar, Van Brecht, D’Ursel, Van Gendt, De Croix, Van Axele, Groesbeek and Van der Schueren families… For more information, see this Wikipedia article
Nicolas van der Dussen, knight of the Teutonic Order, commander of the order in Utrecht in 1460, was also an advisor to Charles the Bold and Louis de Bourbon, bishop of Liège. This is the family of Michiel, 1600-1683, his wife Willemine van Setten, his children Kornelis, Elisabeth, Maria, Otto and Anna.
